1. In Microsoft Office, instead of Calibri font, use Cambria instead. - Don't know if this will help consistently or not.
2. Use Adobe Acrobat or Acrobat Reader. (don't use the OS default Preview app). This seems to work every time. Steps:
- Output the file as a PDF
- Open the PDF using either Adobe Acrobat or Acrobat Reader
- In the Print dialog, click the Advanced button.
- In the Advanced dialog, check the Print As Image check box.
- Print to the printer of your choice.
Printing as an image bypasses the font rendering issue which seems to be the problem.
3. Use the Gutenprint drivers. Link: http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php
- Cannot do 11x17 "Tabloid" paper sizes - at least, I haven't found a Gutenprint driver that would
- Everything prints in Grayscale. No Color. - I've tried several of the "color" Gutenprint drivers, and all of then did only grayscale.
- No feature options to set. Pretty spartan.
That's what I know of thus far. #2 (Print As Image using the Adobe apps) is the most reliable I've found. Hopefully a true "fix" won't far away.

And, to be clear, the resolution will either be from Apple (CUPS update) or Microsoft (new Calibri font). I'm pretty sure HP is clear on this one.
I've heard reports that HP is currently releasing new firmware (Futuresmart 3.9.1, I believe) for their printer models, and this is resolving the issue. At this time, only few models have the new version available, but I'm hoping the new version for the other models is released soon.

Upgrading to firmware 3.9.1 fixed it for me on an M606 and an M553.
I can also vouch for the HP firmware updates (3.9.1). We had several other models not listed (e.g. M602/603) that we updated as well. We also noticed some slowness in printing on those devices to discover that they were still operating on FutureSmart version 2, so we changed that to version 3 and have seen improvements.
As Alex said, newly released firmware for select printers appears to fix the problem.
For our "FutureSmart 3" devices, we too have found update 3.9.1. (version number starts with "2308955"), released by HP on March 1, 2018, fixes the problem quite nicely. HP specifically listed this problem among the fixes for this firmware version.
For our "FutureSmart 4" devices, (or FutureSmart 3 devices that have been "upgraded" to FutureSmart 4 firmware), the current publicly available firmware (update 22.214.171.124) dated Dec. 8, 2017 does NOT fix this error. However, HP has new firmware 4.5.6 for the FutureSmart 4 devices that is supposed to be publicly available soon (that's what I heard April 2), however it does not yet appear to be available publicly yet (perhaps they found some issue). I was fortunate enough to get advance access and have been trying it on a number of my printers ... and it appears to fix the issue (along with some other things), though I've had one report (just one) of a document that still came through with the error..
For the FutureSmart 4 devices, watch closely for the firmware 4.5.6 (or newer) to be released soon.

Apple released MacOS 10.13.4 that resolves the issues on the computer side.
Issues might still occur with some PDF documents created on versions prior to 10.13.4. These documents could either be recreated, or you can upgrade the firmware on your printers
