Our card center is beginning experiments with 2D barcodes. A 2D barcode scanner attached to an iMFP would allow students to work completely from their phones. Since we already have office in the cloud and mobile printing here, the only "grandpa technology" left as part of printing is the old magnetic card.
There is of course, a large number of comments that may be made here about the ubiquitous phone and why don't we just insert chips on the brain stem alla "Dilbert". Does anyone else channel "The Doctor"?
Other technologies that we are looking into are proximity cards and bio-metric scans.
