Here is a great link to a set of tools to understand and improve your SQL server...


Basically, you can download this and run a master stored procedure to drop all the individual stored procedures into the database of your choice.  I would create a fresh database and install the tools into there so I can always get rid of them whenever I want.   Once installed, you can run  sp_BlitzFirst to see if there is anything urgently wrong, then sp_Blitz to see what could use improving.  Here is a video that discusses the SP_blitz tool.
