At the Pharos User Conference in February, we outlined our plans to start introducing cloud technology to Uniprint. Our goal is to reduce the high levels of infrastructure required to manage print, and simplify some of the more challenging parts of Uniprint for you.

There was a lively discussion on whether this made sense, whether it made sense now, and what form it should take. Yadin Flammer from Penn State continued the discussion on the Pharos Community site. We have continued to collect feedback and discuss options ever since.

Everyone is undergoing some transformation of their workflow to the cloud, be it with storage and sharing (dropbox, box.net, google drive, Office 365, iCloud), office style apps (Office 365, Google Docs, iCloud), or other applications, such as SalesForce, Skype, etc. However, print is a part of your core infrastructure, and you quite rightly guard its reliability and security. It has become clear that any transition to the cloud must be careful and gradual. Security, data management and planning needs must be met. We have heard your concerns loud and clear and we have revised our approach.

Pharos will deliver Uniprint 9.0 R2 (Release 2) with MobilePrint 2.1 in the summer, 2015:

  • New product updater service
  • A rollup of all hot fixes
  • Branding changes to reflect our new brand, fonts, imaging and colors.
  • A cloud connector (that is NOT enabled by default)
  • New mobile friendly web pages for the Pharos Print Center and MobilePrint
  • New Credit Card Gateway processing options will be coming soon

Later this year, some optional new features will become available in the cloud. Using these features is not required, but if you choose to, enabling them will be as simple as clicking a few buttons in the Uniprint Administrator. The first available feature will be Web Remote Administration, which is a web-based version of the Pharos Remote Client application.

In other words, Uniprint 9.0 R2 is still our core offering, and all features available on premise in Uniprint 9.0 are still available on premise in Uniprint 9.0 R2. For now, those new features in the cloud are an optional extra; it’s available if you want it, or you can ignore it if you don’t want it.

We thank you for your patience and your active participation in this process. We look forward to serving you well into the future.

Thank you,
