Automatic Registration and Silent Installation

Version 2

After you have installed, configured and registered a Mac Print Scout, you may use that information to make deployment to additional Mac workstations easier. To support mass deployment of Mac Print Scouts in your environment, use the automatic registration and/or silent installation features.

To automatically register additional Mac Print Scouts to your account, you will first create a deployment image. By sharing and using this deployment image, others will be able to install a Mac Print Scout on their Mac workstation and that scout will be automatically registered to your organization's account. With automatic registration, the configuration/registration step is bypassed.

With silent installation, the complete installation, configuration and registration steps are eliminated. To silently install additional Mac Print Scouts, you will first create a deployment image. By sharing and using this deployment image, others will be able to silently install a Mac Print Scout on their Mac workstation. For example, similar to the Print Scout used for Windows, your organization's IT administrator can perform a mass deployment by pushing the package to the organization's Mac workstations where the Mac Print Scout will be automatically installed.

Automatic Registration of Mac Print Scouts

To save a step in the installation process, create a deployment image to share with other people in your organization. Using the deployment image, others will only need to complete the installation process and their Mac Print Scout will be automatically registered to the appropriate account.

    Create the Deployment Image

The deployment image is created once and shared with others in your organization. With the Mac Print Scout Configuration dialog active, open the menu and select Create Deployment Image.

The following dialog is then shown. Click Save to create a deployment image.

You will see a progress indicator at the bottom of the Print Scout Configuration dialog box. When the process completes, you will see a dmg file (disk image) in the specified folder.

Install Mac Print Scout with Automatic Registration - Use Deployment Image

Double click the deployment image you created in the previous section (the dmg file). You will see the Mac Print Scout installer and configuration settings file inside.

Double click the Mac Print Scout installer to initiate installation. The install process is the same as described in the Install the Mac Print Scout section above.

When the installation is done, the Print Scout Configuration will not be shown and the Mac Print Scout will be installed and running.

NOTE: If there was an issue with the automatic registration, the Print Scout Configuration will be automatically displayed. Continue with the configuration/registration process as described in the Configure and Register the Mac Print Scout section of the Mac Print Scout Install Guide.

Silent Installation of Mac Print Scout

To streamline the installation process, create a deployment image to share with other people in your organization. Using this deployment image, you will be able to silently install a Mac Print Scout on other Mac workstations in your environment.

    Create the Deployment Image

Check the "Silent Installation" box and create the deployment image.

    17.png

You will see a progress indicator at the bottom of the Print Scout Configuration dialog box. When the process completes, you will see a dmg file (disk image) in the specified folder.

Install Mac Print Scout Silently - Use Deployment Image

Double click the created deployment image and note the path of the Mac Print Scout installer.

Run the following terminal command to silently install and register the Mac Print Scout.

NOTE: To access the Terminal application, first open your Applications folder, then open your Utilities folder where the Terminal application resides. You may also bring up the Terminal application by using the Spotlight tool in the upper right-hand corner.

    sudo SILENT_INSTALL=1 /usr/sbin/installer -tgt / -pkg <path>/MacPrintScout-2.0.0.1436.pkg

NOTE: "<path>" represents the location path of the Mac Print Scout installer. "MacPrintScout-2.0.0.1436.pkg" represents the Mac Print Scout installer (pkg file). Your Mac Print Scout Installer version may be different than what is shown in the example above.

With a silent installation, no installer or Print Scout Configuration dialog box will be shown. When the process completes, the Mac Print Scout will be up and running.

Refer to the Verifying Mac Print Scout Installation section on the Mac Print Scout Install Guide for details on how to confirm the installation succeeded.
