(...or learn more. We've been posting agenda topics, hotel information, and other details.)

We wanted to reach out to our customers and partners to bring to your attention the Bash "Shellshock" Vulnernability and comment on its impact on Pharos Omega Terminals.

A long-time vulnerability in the Bash command shell (commonly used in Linux and Unix systems) has surfaced in the wild, and has been dubbed “Shellshock.” (More on “Shellshock” can be found here.) The Pharos Omega terminal line (PS150, PS200, PS60) all use a Linux operating system to support their primary functions.

None of the Omega products are running Bash and, therefore, are not impacted by the “Shellshock” vulnerability.

It has come to our attention that customers applying patch releases for the Uniprint products may encounter a problem where a necessary file, PharosSystems.Library.Utility.dll, is quarantined by Symantec Endpoint Protection as it believes this file to have a signature equivalent to “”. When this occurs, the Pharos Print Service will not start.

As part of our release process, Pharos Systems seeks to prevent this problem by submitting all updated components to Symantec for “white listing” within their latest Definitions file. However, we have determined that some intermediate patches have not been white listed.

Please be assured that the file does not contain a virus.

If your PharosSystems.Library.Utility.dll has been quarantined for the reason above, you may safely remove the file from quarantine to restore operation. You may also lower the heuristic level and/or exclude the Pharos program folders from the watchful eye of Symantec Endpoint Protection.

To prevent this in future releases, we will be working more closely with Symantec to ensure that our updates are white listed prior to their posting for customer download. We thank you for using our’ products as part of your output management solution and apologize for any inconvenience that has resulted for the issue discussed above.

The “universal” printer driver is at the core of what is for most Pharos Uniprint or Blueprint solutions. Aside from the terminal, it is the component that end users interact with day in and day out, yet – how much do we really know about this piece of technology that wraps up the entire package?

Join us Tuesday, August 12th, 2014 at 1:00 pm EST and find out!

Universal Print Drivers: Demystified!

With a mission to design print the way it should be, we sought to deliver a pleasant experience for end users with a new interface for releasing print jobs via the web, and design a product that was even easier for administrators to manage.  Users are also given more visibility into their account and balances, allowing them to make informed decisions related to their print activity.

Coupling many lines of code added by dedicated developers with the incredible patience and input from our customers testing the product (thank you), we are very proud to announce the availability of Uniprint 9 to the world.

The Pharos Print Center™

Using a web browser, the Pharos Print Center is a standard feature that allows users to easily manage their printing account to view and release print jobs, check available balance/funds in multiple Pharos banks and purses, view account activity history, select printers, and more.

A single sentence describing the Pharos Print Center doesn’t do it justice, but Bill Sullivan’s demo video does:

Pharos Uniprint 9, Credit Card Gateway, and MobilePrint 2.0 Overview

Customize Your Print Center Experience

For organizations using MobilePrint with Uniprint, users can upload documents to the print queue and modify finishing options.  MobilePrint is an option that is fully integrated with the Print Center, allowing a single user interface for all jobs submitted via a mobile device, Pharos Queues, and Popups.

Credit Card Gateway

Another available option is the Credit Card Gateway, which allows users to add funds directly to their Pharos banks via any major credit card or PayPal account. All credit card related pages are served off PayPal hosted servers, avoiding the need for PCI compliance (Yahoo!)

ADA Compliancy

This may not seem like a big deal until you learn the hefty amount of paperwork and tests Hany Saad endured to earn Uniprint 9’s compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Blind and visually impaired users now have the freedom to confidently act on their own and manage their own print jobs through Popups and the Pharos Station with a JAWS software integration.  Relevant information is read to users guiding them when making a reservation, creating a new account, seeking standard job information, and paying for and releasing their print jobs.

  • Give Uniprint 9 a tryContact Pharos Support or your Reseller/Partner for the download link.  (Due to feedback from the Uniprint 8.4 launch, we had considered putting the download link directly into this announcement; however, we have found with the number of customizations at customer environments, we'd like to be involved in your upgrade to ensure you stay up and running, as well as answer any additional questions you may have!)

We'd also like to give a special thank you to customers who tested Uniprint 9, MobilePrint, and the Credit Card Gateway for us, for your feedback is what allows us to further improve the products we deliver to you. Thank you!

At Pharos, we understand and share your concerns about the software products you use and the manner in which they should function within your environment. In light of the Heartbleed security vulnerability recently exposed in the OpenSSL cryptography library, we have thoroughly reviewed our product lines.  We are pleased to announce that our engineers have not uncovered any vulnerability in the Uniprint, Blueprint, MobilePrint, and our cloud-based product lines, which do not use OpenSSL.

While our Omega terminal products do use OpenSSL, the majority of these use an earlier version of OpenSSL that does not have the Heartbleed vulnerability. In one custom configuration limited to a single customer, the vulnerable version of OpenSSL has been found.  Following the recommendations of the Open SLL Software Foundation, Pharos is working closely with this customer to resolve the limited risk situation with an update to their firmware, which is already being tested in the customer’s environment.

Rest assured that Pharos is committed to the resolution of any security concerns of our customers and partners.

The release of the Pharos iMFP for Canon version 3.2 is now available and adds support for the latest models from Canon: the imageRUNNER ADVANCE 400-iF/500-iF and C42xx.
